Sanjay Shah, J.D., Ph.D.

I am a licensed psychologist offering both clinical and forensic services. Psychological assessment and therapy can provide tremendous benefits including overcoming life’s challenges, developing effective decision-making and problem-solving abilities, and being in the mindset to improve your well-being. My approach is based on psychological research and tailored to meet the needs of each individual. I have been fortunate to have assessed and treated people from all walks of life. My aim is to provide a comfortable and collaborative environment where we can form a customized plan that can be put into action.

Psychological assessment integrates information from a variety of sources and helps provide a deeper and more complete understanding of underlying problems and issues. This process can be thought of as putting together pieces of a puzzle in order to reveal a detailed picture. Assessment can aid in diagnosing as well as in providing rich information to make further recommendations. I provide clinical assessment services in the following areas:

  • Psychoeducational evaluations for students (ages 6 and above) including undergraduate and graduate students; testing typically includes an assessment of intelligence, academic functioning, information processing, attention/executive functioning, emotional/behavioral functioning, and other cognitive areas that may be of concern
  • Psychological evaluations for adults that can be general in nature or specific to addressing various areas such as prospective adoption, independent medical (psychological) examination, risk/threat assessment
  • Neuropsychological evaluations for adults and older adults
  • Targeted evaluations and screenings for specific issues/diagnoses

Additionally, I have extensive training in forensic mental health assessment, which applies psychological science to help answer legal questions. Evaluations most often gather information from interviews, psychological testing, and a review of records in order to formulate an informed and well-supported opinion. I offer forensic mental health assessment and expert testimony in a number of areas including criminal law and family law.

I am also dedicated to providing psychotherapy services to children and adults grounded in empirical research. I apply cognitive behavioral as well as acceptance and commitment principles during therapy while also integrating others strategies based on the needs and goals of each client. I work with those experiencing a number of issues including depression, anxiety, and other mood-related concerns. I also see individuals with problems related to stress management, self-esteem, adjustment to changing life circumstances, emotion regulation, trauma, and grief.

I have been fortunate to having received training and experience in a variety of settings including inpatient and outpatient hospital settings, corrections, university counseling centers, and private practices. My doctorate degree is from Drexel University where I focused on clinical and forensic psychology. I completed a post-doctoral fellowship in forensic psychology from the Emory University School of Medicine, where I currently hold an adjunct faculty position.

My law degree is from Villanova University. The intersection of law and psychology has been the basis of much of my research, writing, and presentations. This is a unique and fascinating junction. I have enjoyed publishing and presenting locally and nationally in areas including psychological testing, cognitive issues in forensic psychology, and risk assessment.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions. I look forward to the possibility of working with you.
