Simona Cohen, NCC, M.Ed.

I am an Associate Professional Counselor (APC) and a National Certified Counselor (NCC). My passion is working with children and their parents/guardians to help them achieve their full potential in their daily functioning and interpersonal relationships. I use a gentle person-centered approach to create a safe and supportive environment for children, adolescents, and adults in which they are encouraged to self-reflect, learn new skills, and make positive changes to enhance their well-being.

My therapeutic approach centers around rational emotive behavior therapy, a type of Cognitive Behavioral therapy. I help my clients identify, challenge and replace their self-defeating/irrational beliefs with healthier, rational beliefs that lead to a happier, more fulfilled life. I believe that it’s not the events that happen in people’s lives that cause them to feel upset/depressed/anxious, but their beliefs about those events that cause distress and unhappiness. In a collaborative effort with the client, and the parents if deemed  necessary, I work from a strength-based and solution-focused perspective to help clients reach their therapeutic goals.

I also employ a variety of art and play therapy techniques in working with children experiencing anxiety, depression, grief, loss, poor self-esteem, family changes and divorce, anger issues, behavioral issues, and trauma. I help my clients learn how to practice relaxation, calming, and problem-solving strategies, as we work toward self-acceptance and a positive self-concept.

I received my Master’s of Education in School Counseling from Georgia State, and my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Maryland. I am currently working towards my full licensure and work under the supervision of licensed psychologist and NDCC co-direction, Christi Bartolomucci.

I have prior experience working in the school setting as a school counselor and as a teacher, so I am keenly aware of the challenges faced by children in the classroom environment.

I look forward to speaking with you!
